Stranger Things Chapter Seven the Lost Sister Review

'Stranger Things' Season two, Episode vii Review: The Lost Sister

In the light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation-focused nine-hour movie that is Stranger Things ii, "The Lost Sister" (Stranger Things Season ii, Episode 7) is the strangest affair of all: a Television receiver episode. The cliffhanger of the Hawkins lab turning into Jurassic Park is left to hang for an 60 minutes, and the Duffer brothers and director Rebecca Thomas lavish their usual ensemble attentions on Eleven, alone. Twitter and IMDB consensus is that this episode is the testify's worst, a judgment, I think, that has as much to exercise with the unexpected intermission in the rampage-watching activity as it does with the storyline. Because encountered on its own, this is the natural direction of Xi's arc—a journey through the past that takes her into the anguish and rage out to the other side, toward a mode forward.

Up until now, Eleven'due south life has been dictated by instructions: from Brenner, her scientist "Papa"; from Mike, trying to keep her safe; and from Hopper, doing the same. She receives one more than in her connexion with her mom, the retentivity loop that reveals some other gifted daughter with Eleven dorsum at the lab.

"I think this is why Mama wanted to talk," Eleven tells her aunt.

She reaches out into the telepathic across to detect the person she saw in her mother'southward newspaper clippings, the one virtually a vanished Indian daughter from London. Eleven tin can't find her, but so she appears in a dream, illuminated by a trash fire. Information technology's the adult female from the Affiliate One opener, the ane with the power of illusion. Her aunt Becky is on the phone with the Hawkins constabulary, trying to reach Hopper, and Eleven can't take the adventure of beingness institute out. She skips out and catches a bus beyond the Illinois state line.

NETFLIX

She arrives in the big city, nervous and excited—let'southward non forget how little Eleven knows of the earth outside of Hopper's motel. She makes her manner into the urban underbelly, through an avenue of squatters and drifters toward a warehouse with a fire in the window. The punks within, led by a dude with a mohawk named Axel, try to scare her off, simply information technology's Axel who ends up scared: he sees spiders crawling on his hand and dances away from Eleven.

NETFLIX

No one else sees them: they're in his heed alone, planted by Kali, the group's leader and the lost daughter from Eleven'south mother's memory message. She'southward grown now, older than Eleven, and the ii connect in a sisterhood that turns quickly to manipulation. After a moment of familial warmth with Eleven, Kali convinces her punk squad her rediscovered sister can be useful: "She tin observe people."

Comatose, Xi hears Hopper's Chapter Six radio apology in her dreams, but Kali pulls her awake to introduce Axel, Dottie, Funshine, and Mick, the freaks to Will, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin's geeks. "Freaks!" Axel says. Yeah, we get it. Despite the hr nosotros get to spend with these folks, they're expendable, their identities less fully formed than the three-D friends Eleven'southward left behind. Kali helped them, and now they helped her: that's all we get. Kali explains their morally dubious mission: killing Hawkins lab veterans, going one-by-1 through the people who participated in Kali and 11's captivity. The Chapter One scene wasn't only an apartment robbery: information technology was a murder.

Eleven's shaken.

"You—kill them?" she says.

"They're criminals," Kali says. "We simply brand them pay for their crimes."

She takes Eleven out to test herself the adjacent twenty-four hours, to exam her power on a railroad train car. Eleven can barely move it, but Kali gives her a manner: her acrimony.

NETFLIX

"Focus on that, not the train, not its weight," she says. It'due south the X-Wing scene in The Empire Strikes Dorsum, except Yoda is training Luke in the dark side—with a nuance of 10-Men: Commencement Course and Magneto'southward anti-human being ethics.

"Your whole life you lot've been lied to," Kali says, leading Eleven through a montage of the reasons for the rage building inside her all season. "The bad men took abroad your habitation, your mother."

Information technology's truthful, but Kali has no infinite in her vision for sympathy here: Eleven is her new family, simply she treats her immediately as a weapon.

They seek out a target, Ray, the man who electro-shocked 11's mom, and set for action: Eleven gets a punk makeover consummate with slicked-back hair. She'due south 1 of them now, and there's a comment here nigh the influence of older kids—a parallel to Dustin admiring Steve and his hair in Chapter Vi—and the draw of falling in with an edgy, mature crowd. The punks make trouble immediately, robbing a gas station and outracing police force sirens after Kali and Eleven's powers make for a ane-two punch that leaves the innocent owner smashed into a wall. They brand their way to Ray'due south and put on their masks. Inside, Ray'southward watching TV and drinking beer: for whatever reason, he looks miserable.

NETFLIX

Eleven telekinetically picks his lock, and the punks steal his wallet and prescription pills as Kali and Eleven face up him. Kali shows him an illusion of their childhood, and he realizes what he's facing as Eleven begins to concoction him. Ray makes excuses—only following orders!—and offers upward a bigger fish: Brenner, who appeared to run across his doom by Demogorgon in Season 1. Manifestly, he lives.

Eleven reaches out like Darth Vader and does her best force-choke, until she sees a shattered picture of Ray and his two daughters. Her rage ebbs, and she stops Kali from shooting him.

Later they escape, Kali tries to turn sisterly again, telling a story of finding a new family unit and losing them that's also generic to carry much weight.

"You're now faced with the same choice, Jane—become back into hiding, or fight, and face him again," she says, and the advice pushes into manipulation: Brenner of a sudden stands in the room, Kali's illusion, and he wonders why Eleven hasn't telepathically looked for him.

Kali'south choice is a fake binary. 11 holds her flannel shirt, the vestige of her other life, and sees Hopper in the telepathic void: he's sick at the lab, and there's Mike, shouting confronting the soldiers nearly the coming monster onslaught. Eleven can't see what's wrong, but she knows they need her.

NETFLIX

Cops break into the warehouse, and after a few more Kali illusions aid the punks escape, Eleven decides to make her own getaway. They tin can't save you, Kali warns her. No, 11 knows. Simply there's another path between hiding and murder. "I can save them," she says, and gets back on a bus, rolling slowly toward Indiana.

"The Lost Sister" does something of import: information technology gives 11 her own path, an agency and an independent fashion forward she'due south never had before. She finds herself and her heroic purpose. But information technology happens in ways that sidestep Stranger Things' strengths, with a linear plot that loosens the evidence's usually taut suspense and, in Kali, a character who needed more resonance and fewer Sith Lord vibes.

It besides leaves questions and conspiracies for another season, similar Brenner'southward true fate, but one flick at a time. Let's get dorsum to Hawkins.
